“A Broward Sheriff’s deputy will have drug charges dropped against him if he can complete a 12 month program, a judge ruled Wednesday.

22-year-old Santiago Mayorga, who has been with the department for just over one year, pled not guilty to charges stemming from a July 4th hit and run accident in Pompano Beach.

After hitting another vehicle on Copans Road shortly after exiting I-95 while off duty in his patrol car, Mayorga went to his home. Investigators arrived there and found marijuana in a plastic bag as well as paraphernalia in plain sight. He was charged with four counts, including possession of LSD and amphetamines.

Mayorga told officers he was coming back from visiting a friend when he hit the vehicle. The driver of the other cartold NBC 6 last month that the police car did not have its lights on at the time.”
